Dodgers try to break the brooms out on Marlins
May 13, 2015 - 1:58 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Los Angeles Dodgers aim for their first home sweep of the Miami Marlins in 12 years on Wednesday night in the finale of a three- game set at Chavez Ravine. The Dodgers have stretched their overall winning streak to five in a row after pounding out a season-high 21 hits in last night's 11-1 rout of the Marlins. Andre Ethier tied a career high with five hits and also drove in three runs, while Scott Van Slyke followed up his walk-off, three-run homer from Monday night with three more hits and two RBI.
Yasmani Grandal and Alex Guerrero each knocked in a pair while Howie Kendrick added four hits, including a solo homer.
Recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City prior to the contest, Mike Bolsinger allowed a run on five hits through 5 2/3 innings.
That has the Dodgers in position to sweep their first series at home from the Marlins since a three-game set from May 16-19, 2003. They did take all three contests of a road series with Miami in 2008.
The Marlins and Dodgers split six meetings last season, with Los Angeles winning two of three at home.
Former Dodger Dan Haren was tagged for six runs on 11 hits over 4 1/3 innings to get the loss, Miami's third in a row that was at least highlighted by Giancarlo Stanton's mammoth homer in the first inning.
Stanton's blast with two down completely cleared the bleachers and landed on the rear of the canopy on the covered pavilion, traveling an estimated 475 feet.
"He crushed that ball," Miami manager Mike Redmond told Miami's official website. "He's hit a couple like that in batting practice the last couple of days. He hammered that thing."
The Marlins have struggled to win games with Jarred Cosart on the mound this season and hope to reverse that trend tonight when he faces the Dodgers for the first time.
Miami is just 1-5 in Cosart's six starts this season despite the right-hander having allowed one run or fewer in three of his first four starts. However, he is on a personal two-start slide and lasted a season-low four innings in a 6-0 setback at San Francisco on Friday.
Cosart gave up four runs on six hits and three walks, striking out two while falling to 1-3 on the year with a 3.67 earned run average. All four runs allowed came on a grand slam.
Carlos Frias will make his third start of the season tonight for the Dodgers in place of the injured Brandon McCarthy.
Frias has won both starts, logging 5 1/3 scoreless innings to beat Arizona 8-0 on May 1. He then faced the hosting Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday and yielded three runs on six hits and a walk in five frames of work. He got plenty of support in a 14-4 win and is 3-0 with a 2.13 ERA in four total appearances this season.
The 25-year-old righty will face the Marlins for the first time.
