Indians take series from White Sox
May 22, 2015 - 5:10 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Nick Swisher and Mike Aviles hit back-to- back homers in the first inning, and Danny Salazar posted a quality start in carrying the Indians to a 5-2 win over the White Sox in the finale of a four- game series.Salazar (5-1) flirted with disaster plenty of times but held the White Sox scoreless over six frames. He struck out eight and scattered five hits and three walks to bounce back from his shortest stint of the year.
Aviles finished with four hits, Swisher had two and the Indians cruised to their first three-game winning streak of the season.
Chicago followed up a six-game winning streak by dropping the final three games of the series.
"It (stinks) losing a few in a row," White Sox designated hitter Adam LaRoche said. "We'll snap out of it."
John Danks (2-4) took the loss after coughing up five runs on six hits and four walks. Danks settled down and pitched into the sixth, but the left-hander struggled mightily early on.
Jason Kipnis led off with a double, Carlos Santana walked and Michael Brantley singled in a run in the blink of an eye. Danks induced a run-scoring double- play off the bat of Ryan Raburn to seemingly limit the damage, but home runs by Swisher and Aviles made it 4-0.
Roberto Perez led off the second with a walk and eventually scored from third on Santana's swinging bunt, and the insurance was plenty for Salazar.
The White Sox had runners on in every inning against Salazar but never pushed a run across. Avisail Garcia struck out with the bases loaded in the third, while Jose Abreu hit into an unlucky double play in the fifth. Abreu tagged one to deep center that Michael Bourn tracked down at the warning track before doubling off Melky Cabrera at first.
"That was a big play," Indians manager Terry Francona said. "Not only is it maybe second and third, or third and a run in, but we get a double play out of it. That was big."
Tyler Flowers' two-run homer off Bryan Shaw in the ninth spoiled Cleveland's shutout bid.
