Marlins hope to support Alvarez in clash with Orioles

May 22, 2015 - 2:54 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Henderson Alvarez makes his second start since returning from the disabled list on Friday when the Miami Marlins open a three-game series with the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards.

Alvarez returned from right shoulder inflammation on Sunday and absorbed the loss to Atlanta, but even though he allowed six runs over 5 1/3 frames, his Marlins were nearly no-hit by Shelby Miller. Still, Alvarez fell to 0-3 to go along with a 6.23 ERA.

He has faced the Orioles five times and is 1-2 against them with a 3.12 ERA.

Miami is still searching for its first win under new manager Dan Jennings after getting swept in a four-game series by the Arizona Diamondbacks that culminated with a 7-6 loss on Thursday.

Martin Prado had three hits and one RBI for Miami, which has dropped seven straight games overall.

"We're not making the plays that we need to make," said losing pitcher Sam Dyson.

Baltimore, meanwhile, secured a series win on Thursday, as Steve Pearce hit his first career grand slam and the Orioles got past the Seattle Mariners, 5-4.

Tommy Hunter (2-1) earned the win after escaping a bases-loaded jam during the eighth prior to J.J. Hardy's go-ahead RBI single in the home half.

"Huge win for the club," said Pearce. "We won the series and now we get to bring that momentum on the road."

Heading to the hill for the Orioles on Friday will be righty Ubaldo Jimenez, who is 3-3 with a 2.43 ERA. Jimenez lost to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Saturday, despite allowing just tow runs over seven innings. He also struck out six without walking a batter.

Jimenez is 1-2 in five starts against the Marlins with a 4.07 ERA.

This is the first series between these teams since the Marlins took two of three back in 2010.
