Mets welcome champs to Citi Field

Jun 9, 2015 - 2:11 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Mets hope to build on their slim advantage atop the NL East on Tuesday evening when they begin a three-game series with the San Francisco Giants.

The Mets capped off a 3-4 road trip with Sunday's victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. In splitting the four-game set, New York moved a half-game past the Washington Nationals in the division.

Jacob deGrom struck out 10 batters over seven innings of the 6-3 win, scattering three runs -- two earned -- on five hits and three walks. He is 4-0 over his past five outings, all New York wins.

"In the first inning, I gave up back-to-back hits and made some mistakes over the middle," said deGrom. "After that, I had to focus and start locating a little better."

Curtis Granderson hit two leadoff home runs off D-backs starter Josh Collmenter in the first and fifth innings and Wilmer Flores did it in the sixth. Eric Campbell also homered off Collmenter, a two-run blast.

Noah Syndergaard will look to move past the worst outing of his young career tonight for the Mets.

Facing the San Diego Padres on Tuesday, Syndergaard was blitzed for seven runs on 10 hits over four innings, striking out 10 to zero walks. He interestingly became the second pitcher in baseball's modern era to allow at least 10 hits and strike out at least 10 batters in fewer than five innings of work. San Diego's Andrew Cashner had become the first pitcher to do so the previous night against New York.

The 22-year-old righty is 2-3 with a 3.77 earned run average through his first five MLB starts and faces the Padres for the first time having gone 2-0 with a 0.68 ERA through a pair of home starts.

Fellow rookie Chris Heston will face the Mets for the first time in his career having had a three-decision win streak halted in his last start.

Heston struggled in Tuesday's 7-4 setback to the Pittsburgh Pirates, giving up five runs on seven hits and three walks over 3 2/3 innings. He struck out six while falling to 5-4 with a 4.29 ERA on the year.

The right-hander has struggled over his last four starts despite his ability to pick up wins. Over his past 18 2/3 innings, he has yielded 16 runs, 26 hits and eight walks.

The Giants were denied a three-game sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies with Sunday's 6-4 loss, their sixth in eight games. They sit a game back of the Los Angeles Dodgers for first place in the NL West.

Ryan Vogelsong was charged with five runs on seven hits over his 6 2/3 innings to take the loss and the bullpen gave up a go-ahead two-run double to the Phillies' Jeff Francoeur in the seventh frame.

"It was a hard-fought series," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "I thought (Vogelsong) threw the ball well, even those runs that he gave up."

Joe Panik extended his hitting streak to 12 games, finishing 3-for-5, while Matt Duffy, Angel Pagan and Brandon Belt each drove in a run for San Francisco.

The Giants went 6-1 versus the Mets last season, winning three of four in New York. They have won 11 of their past 15 on the road in this series.
