Giants try to even set with Rockies

Jun 27, 2015 - 2:07 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Francisco Giants look to avoid losing more ground in the NL West when they resume a three-game series versus the Colorado Rockies Saturday at AT&T Park.

The Giants suffered an 8-6 loss to the Rockies in Friday's series opener and are now two games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers for the NL West lead. The Dodgers defeated the Miami Marlins last night.

Colorado had an 8-3 lead in the top of the ninth inning and the Giants had a rally in the bottom half fall short. Brandon Crawford scored on a passed ball and both Gregor Blanco and Joe Panik provided RBI singles. However, Matt Duffy and Buster Posey both struck out to end the game.

Panik had three hits, Andrew Susac homered and starting pitcher Tim Hudson absorbed the loss for allowing five runs and 10 hits in 6 2/3 innings.

"We fought hard ... That's all you can ask," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.

San Francisco entered this series with five wins in seven games.

Tim Lincecum struggled his last time out and looks to bounce back for the Giants Saturday afternoon. Lincecum was tagged for five runs and seven hits in only 1 1/3 innings of a 10-2 loss at Los Angeles on Sunday.

Lincecum, a two-time NL Cy Young Award winner, was 2-0 in his previous three starts and fell to 7-4 with a 3.86 ERA in 14 starts. Lincecum is 6-2 in his last eight decisions and lost to Colorado on April 15, when he allowed four runs (3 earned) and six hits in five innings.

The right-hander, who has a 5-2 mark in seven home outings, has made 29 career starts against the Rockies and is 11-10 with a 3.96 ERA.

Colorado has prevailed in five of its last six games and kicked off a 10-game road trip on a high note.

Nolan Arenado homered twice and finished with four RBI. He is second in the majors with 64 RBI and has gone deep 22 times. Carlos Gonzalez went 5-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored, while Ben Paulsen recorded three hits and knocked in a pair of runs for the Rockies.

"It's almost do-or-die time for us," Arenado said. "We don't want to dig ourselves such a big hole at the All-Star break to where we're going to be in trouble."

The Rockies are eight games off the lead in the NL West.

Chad Bettis took advantage of the run support and held on for the win, charged with three runs and six hits in six innings.

Colorado will also visit Oakland and Arizona on the journey, and will hand the ball to Chris Rusin on Saturday. He is 3-2 with a 5.03 earned run average in six games (5 starts) and ended a personal two-game losing streak in Sunday's 10-4 win over Milwaukee, giving up three runs and seven hits in six innings.

Rusin has allowed 16 runs in his last three trips to the hill and made one start against the Giants in his career. He threw seven shutout innings of three-hit ball with three K's and two walks.

The Rockies swept a three-game set in San Francisco from April 13-15 and are 7-3 against the Giants this season.
