A's cruise past Rockies
Jun 30, 2015 - 5:11 AM Oakland, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Josh Reddick and Ike Davis smacked two-run homers as part of a four-run first inning and the Oakland Athletics defeated the Colorado Rockies 7-1 in the opener of a three-game set.Billy Butler cracked a solo shot for the A's, who were swept by the Kansas City Royals over the weekend.
Kendall Graveman (5-4) scattered five hits and walked three over seven scoreless innings to notch the win.
"He's pitched as consistently as anyone in the rotation," A's manager Bob Melvin said of Graveman.
David Hale (2-3) allowed five runs on nine hits over seven frames for Colorado. Charlie Blackmon had a solo homer in defeat.
The A's plated four runs in the first and added another in the fourth to jump out to a comfortable lead.
Stephen Vogt hit a one-out single in the opening frame and Reddick sent his two-run blast over the wall in right-center. Butler followed with a base hit and Davis launched a towering shot deep into the seats in right-center for his two-run shot.
Butler whacked his leadoff solo blast just over the glove of a leaping Blackmon in center for a 5-0 margin in the fourth.
Blackmon's homer to begin the eighth finally got Colorado on the board, but Butler's RBI double and Brett Lawrie's run-scoring triple in the home eighth extended the margin to 7-1.
"It's tough playing catchup," Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki said. "They were just better than us tonight."
