Giants, Marlins continue set in Miami

Jul 1, 2015 - 2:18 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Francisco Giants will try to even their three- game series with the Miami Marlins on Wednesday evening when they turn to rookie Chris Heston.

The Giants were undone in last night's opener by the speed of Marlins shortstop Dee Gordon, who legged out a three-run, inside-the-park homer in the second inning to key Miami's 5-3 win.

With two outs and a pair of runners in scoring position, Gordon hit a liner to the gap and right fielder Gregor Blanco tried unsuccessfully to flip the ball using only his glove to center fielder Angel Pagan. By the time the ball was into the infield, Gordon was sliding head-first into home plate to complete his 14-second journey around the bases for his first homer of the year.

"It was a thing of beauty. He had a great swing on the ball and split the gap perfect. It was much needed at that time," Marlins manager Dan Jennings said.

Justin Bour went deep off Ryan Vogelsong the following inning as the Marlins won for just the second time in their last eight games.

Mat Latos surrendered six hits and three runs -- two earned -- over six innings to earn the victory.

Buster Posey homered and Brandon Belt added an RBI single for the Giants, who came into this series winners in seven of 10 games.

"I feel good and I'm just trying to keep it simple," said Posey, who also scored on a wild pitch and has driven in 18 runs over his last 10 games.

Vogelsong was charged with seven hits and four runs over six frames.

Heston, meanwhile, looks to pick up a third victory in as many starts tonight when he faces the Marlins for the first time.

Heston has won three of his last four starts, a span that began with his 11- strikeout no-hitter against the New York Mets on June 9. After losing a 4-0 decision to Arizona in his next start, Heston rebounded with victories over Los Angeles and San Diego.

The 27-year-old righty is coming off a solid effort in Thursday's 13-8 win over the Padres. He gave up just two runs on five hits and a walk over seven innings, striking out six to move to 8-5 on the year with a 3.73 earned run average.

Miami's Dan Haren hopes to get a little run support tonight as he looks to halt a three-start losing streak.

Haren has not won since June 3 and the Marlins have been outscored 14-2 over his last three outings. Haren has allowed nine of those runs and his personal skid has dropped his season record to 6-5 with a 3.38 ERA.

The right-hander is coming off a 5-1 setback to St. Louis on Thursday, charged with four runs and seven hits over six innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out six.

Haren did beat the Giants on May 7 with seven innings of two-run ball, improving to 7-6 against them lifetime with a 2.92 ERA.

These teams split a four-game bill in San Francisco back in May.
