New York Yankees

Team Report

The news on injured OF-DH Hideki Matsui continued to be bad as
the Yankees announced before the series opener on Thursday that
his sore left knee had not progressed enough to allow him to
take batting practice over the weekend. Matsui has not
responded well to physical therapy and could be out until after
the All-Star break. ... The news was better for injured RHPs
Brian Bruney and Phil Hughes. Bruney, who has a torn ligament
in his right foot, allowed one run and two hits in two innings
in the Gulf Coast League. Hughes, who has been out since April
30 with a broken rib, threw 90 feet on level ground. ... RHP
Chien-Ming Wang, who has a torn tendon in his right foot,
resumed upper-body workouts. ... Friday's ceremonial first pitch
was thrown by retired U.S. Army captain and current Yankees
intern Tony Odierno, who served in Iraq in 2004.
