Turner, Sixers down reeling Knicks
Jan 23, 2014 - 7:00 AM New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Evan Turner racked up a career-high 34 points along with 11 rebounds as the Philadelphia 76ers dealt the crumbling New York Knicks a fifth straight loss, a 110-106 setback at Madison Square Garden.Several other Sixers came up with big efforts to help the club halt a three- game skid. Michael Carter-Williams stuffed the stat sheet with 19 points, 12 rebounds and seven rebounds, Thaddeus Young delivered 19 points and seven boards and James Anderson shot 8-of-11 from the field in an 18-point effort.
"Anytime we can combine pace with sharing it's a good thing," said Sixers coach Brett Brown. "Tonight we happened to shoot threes rather well. We didn't turn it over."
Carmelo Anthony paced New York with 28 points and Andrea Bargnani netted 20 in defeat. Iman Shumpert added 19 points with eight rebounds, while Tyson Chandler posted a double-double of 10 points and 14 boards.
After falling behind by a 90-84 score early in the fourth quarter after New York went on a 13-0 tear, the 76ers dominated the final nine minutes to prevail.
Turner led the charge, dropping in eight points during a pivotal 12-2 run that sent Philadelphia ahead to stay. He and Carter-Williams finished the spurt with back-to-back threes, the last giving the Sixers a 96-92 edge with 5:11 to go.
A J.R. Smith triple brought the Knicks back within one, but Young and Anderson converted consecutive layups for a 100-95 lead with 3:16 remaining.
Turner's fall-away baseline jumper with 1:14 to go capped off his tremendous night and all but ended any New York comeback hopes, with the Sixers carrying a 107-100 margin into the final minute following the basket.
"There were a lot of things wrong defensively tonight," said Chandler. "I think we should have been a little more aggressive on Turner, especially when he got going."
Philadelphia was up 84-77 with a minute left in the third quarter before the Knicks ripped off 13 consecutive points, with Tim Hardaway Jr.'s layup and free throw putting the Sixers in a 90-84 hole with 9:27 left. Hardaway had six points and Smith netted five during the burst.
The Sixers were ahead nearly the entire first half, assuming control via a 13-0 run in which Turner dropped in eight points to claim a 19-9 lead nearing the midway mark of the opening quarter. Philadelphia shot 56 percent for the initial stanza to take a 33-26 advantage into the second, though the Knicks were able to cut into the deficit near the conclusion of the half.
An Anthony 3-pointer capped a 5-0 surge that brought New York within 59-56 just 20.1 seconds prior to the intermission, right before Turner sent the 76ers into the break up by five with two late free throws.
Shumpert buried a three just over three minutes into the second half to give the Knicks a 68-67 edge, but Young's 3-point play on the other end ignited a 9-0 spurt that put Philadelphia in front by eight with 6:33 to go in the third quarter.
