Duke gets revenge with rout of Notre Dame

Feb 7, 2015 - 10:36 PM Durham, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Notre Dame ran into a buzzsaw at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Saturday afternoon and remained winless at Duke.

Matt Jones scored 15 of his career-high 17 points in the first half and the fourth-ranked Blue Devils got their revenge with a 90-60 rout of the 10th- ranked Fighting Irish.

Notre Dame (21-4, 9-3 ACC) had won two straight against Duke (20-3, 7-3), including a thrilling 77-73 decision on Jan. 28 in South Bend.

But the Blue Devils came out of the gates on fire Saturday, shooting 81 percent from the field and going 7-of-8 from beyond the arc in the first half. Notre Dame, meanwhile, went 8-of-22 from the floor and found themselves down 50-24 at the break.

"We played great in the first half," said Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski. "We played really well in the second half too, but the first half was lights out. Our defense was tremendous. I think our defense sparked our offense."

The Fighting Irish fell to 0-7 all-time at Duke. Saturday marked Notre Dame's first visit to Cameron Indoor Stadium since Jan. 26, 1994.

Jahlil Okafor scored 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting and pulled down 10 rebounds for the Blue Devils, who have won three in a row. Justise Winslow tallied 19 points and 11 boards.

Steve Vasturia ended with 15 points for the Fighting Irish, who have lost two of their last three games. Demetrius Jackson contributed 11 points.

The 30-point setback was Notre Dame's largest since a 31-point loss at Connecticut (101-70) on Jan. 12, 1999.

"We'll move on quickly," said Notre Dame coach Mike Brey. "I would hope and I would think -- given the leaders I have and the leaders of this group -- that they'll bounce back in another tough place to play against a team that can guard us really just as well. We have a big challenge at Clemson."

After falling behind 6-0, Duke scored 14 straight points to take control. The score was 19-11 when the Blue Devils went on a 24-2 run. The home team made five 3-pointers during the surge to make it 43-13 with 4:36 left in the first half.

Duke shot 60.8 percent for the game, while holding Notre Dame to 39.7 percent. The Blue Devils also outscored the Fighting Irish by a 19-6 margin at the foul line.
