Trimble, Wells lead Maryland past Michigan
Feb 28, 2015 - 8:56 PM College Park, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Melo Trimble posted 19 points and five assists as 14th-ranked Maryland beat Michigan 66-56 on Saturday afternoon.Dez Wells chipped in 13 points and six rebounds on Senior Day, helping the Terrapins complete a perfect home record in conference play for the first time since the 2001-02 season.
Jake Layman scored 10 points for Maryland (24-5, 12-4 Big Ten), while former Wolverine Evan Smotrycz grabbed nine rebounds.
"Obviously, it was a great day for us," said Maryland coach Mark Turgeon. "To be able to play everybody and honor every senior, it was hard to do. A lot of good things happened today. A lot of the seniors played well for us. We got everybody in and we finished 9-0 in the league at home, which is hard to do."
The Terrapins notched their fifth straight win and closed to within 1 1/2 games of first-place Wisconsin in the Big Ten standings with two to play.
Spike Albrecht and Zak Irvin each had 15 points for the Wolverines (14-14, 7-9), who have dropped six of their last seven games.
"It's the same old story and we're working really hard but just not quite there to beat a team like Maryland, especially on the road," said Michigan coach John Beilein.
The Terrapins took control late in the first half, going on a 12-0 run to build a 30-21 lead at the break. The Wolverines were held scoreless after a Ricky Doyle layup put them up three with 4:57 remaining.
Michigan trimmed its deficit to 43-40 on an Albrecht 3-pointer with 8:40 left in the game, but Trimble buried two threes around an Irvin jumper to make it 49-42.
The outstanding freshman Trimble later hit three free throws to give Maryland its first double-digit lead at 54-44 with 5:18 remaining, and Wells nailed the last of the Terrapins' 11 3-pointers to make it 60-48.
