Broncos down Aztecs in MWC battle

Mar 1, 2015 - 7:03 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Derrick Marks had 18 points and five rebounds as Boise State took a 56-46 win over No. 24 San Diego State in a critical Mountain West Conference matchup

James Webb III scored 16 points with 12 rebounds for the Broncos (22-7, 12-4 MWC), who have won four straight to move into a tie with San Diego State for first place in the conference.

Winston Shepard had 16 points while J.J. O'Brien added eight points for the Aztecs (22-7, 12-4), who had a school-record 29-game home winning streak snapped.

"It's been a long time since I've come up here with a frown on my face and feeling disappointed," said San Diego State coach Steve Fisher. "I've got both of those. We had an opportunity to clinch at least a share of the title tonight and we didn't get it done. That's disappointing."

The Broncos were trailing by seven when the team went on a 10-0 run to take a 42-39 lead with just under eight minutes to play.

After O'Brien stopped the run with a layup, Kevin Allen made a layup and Webb buried a 3-pointer for a six-point lead.

Aqeel Quinn then put in a layup to make it a four-point game with just under six minutes to play, but San Diego State did not score another point until inside a minute to play, and by that time Boise State had built a nine-point lead to put the game away.

"We knew we could come back, especially with this team," said Marks. "We have players that can make a lot of shots and guys that can drive and make plays. We just did what we do best."

The Aztecs led for much of the first half, and a 7-0 run, thanks to Boise State going almost five minutes without a point, saw the team holding a 17-8 lead after Malik Pope hit a pair of free throws.

An 11-3 run from the Broncos saw the team cut their deficit to one. San Diego State took a 24-21 lead into the break and expanded its lead to 39-32 with just over 11 minutes to play after a Pope free throw.
