Niang powers No. 13 Iowa State over Alabama

Nov 25, 2014 - 6:28 AM Kansas City, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Georges Niang had a game-high 28 points along with six rebounds to help No. 13 Iowa State post an 84-74 victory over Alabama in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic.

Dustin Hogue had 17 points, Naz Long scored 15 and Matt Thomas supplied 13 and eight rebounds for the Cyclones (3-0), who will take on Maryland in the championship round on Tuesday.

"It's a great win for us," Iowa State head coach Fred Hoiberg said. "Georges was unbelievable all night long."

Rodney Cooper had 27 points and five rebounds, while Levi Randolph totaled 18 points and five boards for the Crimson Tide (3-1), who will play Arizona State in the consolation game on Tuesday.

Alabama led for the first several minutes of the first half, but Bryce Dejean- Jones' 3-pointer halfway through gave Iowa State the lead.

The Cyclones built their lead as high as 12 later in the first half, but the Crimson Tide scored the final four points of the half to cut the deficit to 43-37.

A Cooper 3-pointer just over two minutes in got Alabama within one, but Long countered with a 3-pointer at the other end.

Cooper knocked down another trey to give the Crimson Tide a 51-50 lead 5 1/2 minutes in, but Thomas hit consecutive 3-pointers.

Alabama kept at it and a Ricky Tarrant 3-pointer with 11 minutes left gave the team a 59-58 lead, but Long was fouled when he made a 3-pointer. He sank the free throw to complete the four-point play.

Long hit four more free throws for a 66-59 advantage, but Cooper kept draining 3s with his last one coming with just over two minutes to play to cut Alabama's deficit to 76-73.

Niang, though, hit two free throws and Hogue followed with two layups to put the game away.

Game Notes

Iowa State shot a blistering 58 percent, while Alabama made just 38.6 percent of its attempts from the floor ... Alabama won the only previous meeting between the schools during the 2007-08 season.
