Oklahoma clips Kansas in ranked Big 12 clash

Mar 8, 2015 - 6:49 AM Norman, OK (SportsNetwork.com) - Buddy Hield's bucket, the last of his team- high 18 points, came with two-tenths of a second left in regulation and lifted No. 15 Oklahoma to a 75-73 decision over No. 9 Kansas in the regular-season finale for both programs.

Isaiah Cousins posted 16 points and four assists for the Sooners (21-9, 12-6 Big 12), while TaShawn Thomas added 13 points. Oklahoma has clinched at least a tie for second in the conference.

With leading scorer Perry Ellis out, Frank Mason poured in a game-best 21 points for the Jayhawks (24-7, 13-5). Landen Lucas totaled 13 points and 12 rebounds, with Jamari Traylor and Kelly Oubre totaling 12 apiece.

As the No. 1 seed in the upcoming tournament, Kansas will rest until a Thursday quarterfinal.

"I thought our kids competed well, I thought OU played hard," said Kansas coach Bill Self. "I thought it was a good college game."

Mason connected on two free throws with 9.4 seconds to play, and Kansas closed to within 71-70, but Jordan Woodard drew contact at the other end almost immediately and he made his two tries from the line with 7.4 showing.

Oklahoma made a tactical error in fouling Mason again, but this time behind the three-point line, and Mason dropped in all three for a 73-73 deadlock.

That set up the final play, which began as Woodard drove for a layup as the final seconds ticked down. He missed the shot, but Hield was there for the put-back as the buzzer sounded.

"I just saw that Jordan had a good attack to the rim," said Hield. "I just saw the ball hit the rim and I was able to tap it back in."

Thanks to a pair of Frank Booker treys and Hield bucket, the Sooners took a 27-16 edge in the late stages of the first half.

Kansas eventually whittled its deficit to 32-30 at halftime despite shooting only 27 percent (10-of-37) from the field.

Cousins completed a three-point play and the Sooners were ahead 47-40 early in the second half. Lucas' jumper capped a brief surge by the Jayhawks, who took a 55-54 edge with eight minutes to go.

Hield's pull-up shot gave Oklahoma the lead back at 63-61 a short time later.

Hield also contributed seven rebounds to Oklahoma's win ... The Sooners scored 18 points off 11 Jayhawks turnovers ... Kansas' Brannen Greene was suspended due to a conduct violation, while Cliff Alexander was on the sidelines for a third consecutive game due to an NCAA investigation.
