Top-ranked Pittsburgh eyes eighth straight win

Feb 24, 2009 - 11:22 AM No. 1 Pittsburgh (25-2) at Providence (16-11), 7:00 p.m. EST

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island (Ticker) -- Pittsburgh may be the top team in the nation, but it is still chasing the top spot in the Big East Conference.

The top-ranked Panthers go for their eighth straight win when they visit Providence on Tuesday.

After knocking off then-No. 1 Connecticut and defeating DePaul last week, Pittsburgh moved atop the coaches poll with a little help from Oklahoma and North Carolina - both of which were ranked higher and also lost over the weekend.

The Panthers (25-2, 12-2 Big East) enter the game tied for third place in the conference, one-half game behind both UConn (13-2) and Louisville (13-2) with two weeks left in the season.

DeJuan Blair is coming off a monstrous week in which he recorded 22 points and 23 rebounds in the 76-68 win over Connecticut and followed with 20 and 18 in an 80-61 triumph over DePaul on Saturday.

Providence (16-11, 8-7) has lost two straight games and five of its last seven as its NCAA Tournament hopes are all but over.

Weyinmi Efejuku scored a career-high 31 points but the Friars lost to Notre Dame, 103-84, on Saturday. Efejuku leads the team in scoring at 14.4 per contest.
