UCLA beats WVU for WNIT title

Apr 4, 2015 - 9:47 PM Morgantown, WV (SportsNetwork.com) - Jordin Canada scored a career-high 31 points and UCLA snuck past West Virginia 62-60 in the WNIT title game on Saturday.

Canada also had four steals for the Bruins (19-18), who won their first WNIT crown. Lajahna Drummer tallied eight points and eight rebounds.

Averee Fields ended with 17 points for the Mountaineers (23-15), who were seeking their first postseason title. Bria Holmes and Linda Stepney contributed 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Trailing 53-50 with 4:31 to play, UCLA scored seven straight points to take the lead for good. Kari Korver made a 3-pointer before Canada and Kelli Hayes put in layups to make it 57-53.

After Stepney made two free throws for West Virginia, Monique Billings went 1- of-2 from the line to make it 58-55 with 48.4 seconds remaining. The margin was the same after Stepney and Canada traded layups.

Canada then came up with a steal before making two free throws with 18.9 seconds left. Stepney responded with a 3-pointer to get the Mountaineers within 62-60, but the Bruins ran out the rest of the clock.

Prior to Saturday's victory over West Virginia, UCLA had not won a postseason tournament since upsetting Stanford to win the 2006 Pac-10 Tournament.
