No. 18 West Virginia holds on to beat Villanova
Jan 13, 2010 - 2:37 AM MORGANTOWN, W.Va.(AP) -- Korinne Campbell scored 10 points, including two late free throws, and No. 18 West Virginia held on to beat Villanova 45-41 on Tuesday night.Despite their lowest point total of the season, the Mountaineers (16-1, 4-0 Big East) were able to eek out their 14th straight victory, the school's longest streak since putting together 22 straight during the 1991-1992 season.
After Laura Sweeney missed a layup that would've tied the game at 43, Campbell was fouled with 25.1 seconds left and sank both free throws to put the game out of reach.
West Virginia led 41-35 with 4:24 remaining in the game, but Villanova's Maria Getty hit a 3 then after a Sarah Miles layup, Getty nailed another from beyond the arc to bring the Wildcats (10-5, 0-3) within two.
Madina Ali and Asya Bussie added eight points apiece for the Mountaieers and Ali grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds, including 10 defensive boards.
Sweeney was the only Wildcat in double figures, scoring a career-high 19 points.
West Virginia has made a habit of winning close in conference play as three of its four Big East wins have come by just four points. The Mountaineers have shot below 38 percent in each of them.
