Lady Tigers escape first-round scare

Mar 25, 2013 - 2:14 AM Baton Rouge, LA (Sports Network) - Danielle Ballard and Theresa Plaisance led the way with 16 points apiece as the sixth-seeded LSU Lady Tigers outlasted the 11th-seeded Green Bay Phoenix, 75-71, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the Maravich Center.

Adrienne Webb netted 15 points and Bianca Lutley added 13 points for LSU (21-11), which will take on third-seeded Penn State in the second round. Ballard and Jeanne Kenney dished out six assists apiece.

Sarah Eichler led all scorers with 22 points for Green Bay (29-3), which snapped a 24-game win streak. Adrian Ritchie poured in 16 points before fouling out. Jenny Gilbertson chipped in 15 points off the bench, and Lydia Bauer had 11 points in the setback.

LSU outshot Green Bay from the field in the first half, 48.1 percent to 39.1 percent, as it took a 32-27 lead into intermission.

The Lady Tigers continued to lead comfortably well into the second half, including by 13 with under seven minutes to play, but the Phoenix worked their way back into the game with a 9-0 run. Green Bay was within three points of the lead in the final minute, but LSU sealed its fate by going 3-of-4 from the foul line in the final 15 seconds.

Green Bay lost despite draining 12-of-28 from beyond the arc. LSU made fewer 3-pointers on the night but did so at a better rate (9-of-14).
