Louisville holds off USF, will face UConn

Mar 9, 2014 - 11:14 PM Uncasville, CT (SportsNetwork.com) - Shoni Schimmel nailed a jumper between three defenders with 5.9 seconds left to lift third-ranked Louisville to a 60-56 win over South Florida on Sunday in the semifinals of the American Athletic Conference Tournament.

The basket gave the Cardinals a 58-56 lead and on the ensuing inbound pass Schimmel's sister, Jude Schimmel, stole the ball from the Courtney Williams at halfcourt.

Williams fouled Jude Schimmel, who knocked down a pair from the line with 3.3 left to put the game away.

Shoni Schimmel scored 17 and Tia Gibbs added 12 points for the Cardinals (30-3), who will face top-ranked and unbeaten Connecticut in the tournament final on Monday. Antonita Slaughter had 11 points and Asia Taylor contributed 11 rebounds.

Inga Orekhova and Williams scored 19 points apiece for the Bulls (19-12), who had a six-game winning streak snapped.

Following three ties early in the second half South Florida scored six straight to take a 44-38 lead with just under 15 minutes on the clock.

The Bulls led for nearly 10 minutes until Shoni Schimmel knocked down a trey, which knotted the game at 52 with 5 1/2 left to play.

Williams tied the game with just over a minute left but missed a trey with 16 seconds remaining. Taylor grabbed the rebound and dished to Shoni Schimmel for the deciding score.

Louisville trailed 20-10 with just over 11 minutes left in the first half but finished the half with a 23-9 tear for a 33-29 lead at the break.

The Cardinals and Huskies will meet again a week after UConn rolled to a 68-48 win last Monday in the regular-season final for both teams.
