Maryland muscles past Texas
Mar 26, 2014 - 2:08 AM College Park, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Alyssa Thomas tallied a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds as the fourth-seeded Maryland Terrapins outlasted the fifth-seeded Texas Longhorns, 69-64, in the second round of the women's NCAA Tournament at the Comcast Center.Alicia DeVaughn netted 12 points with seven rebounds for Maryland (27-6), which advances to the Sweet 16 where the team will meet up with top-seeded Tennessee Sunday. Lexie Brown and Laurin Mincy each chipped in 10 points in the win.
Krystle Henderson scored 14 points to pace Texas (23-12), while Chassidy Fussell netted 13 points of her own. Nneka Enemkpali narrowly missed a double- double with nine points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
Maryland connected on 41.2 percent of its field goal tries in the first half, compared to just 33.3 percent shooting from the floor by Texas in the frame. Still, the two teams went into the locker rooms knotted 31-31 at the intermission.
Both teams improved their shooting accuracy in the second period. The Terrapins came out and buried 45.8 percent of their shots in the half, and sunk 16-of-18 from the free-throw line. The Longhorns improved, but just to 38.7 percent shooting from the field, allowing the Terps to gain a five-point advantage for the win.
Maryland had a 42-33 edge in rebounding, and held a 28-22 advantage in points in the paint. Texas outscored the Terrapins from 3-point range, 24-6.
