Tar Heels upset Gamecocks, advance to Elite Eight

Mar 31, 2014 - 2:15 AM Stanford, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Diamond DeShields poured in 19 points to lead the fourth-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels past the top-seeded South Carolina Gamecocks, 65-58, in the Stanford regional semifinals of the NCAA Tournament at Maples Pavilion.

Stephanie Mavunga tallied 13 points and nine rebounds for UNC (27-9), which will take on Stanford, the regional's host team, in the Elite Eight.

For South Carolina (29-5), Alaina Coates led all scorers with 22 points while adding 11 rebounds and four blocks as well. Tiffany Mitchell and Aleighsa Welch scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The Tar Heels led from the opening tip and took a 29-21 advantage into intermission after outshooting the Gamecocks from the field in the first half, 42.9 percent to 33.3 percent.

UNC pulled ahead by as many as 11 early in the second half before South Carolina stormed back to make it just a one-point game, 43-42, with 8:46 left on a layup by Coates. The Gamecocks would never overtake the lead, however, and the Tar Heels shot 5-of-6 at the foul line over the final 1:14 to put the game away.

This marks the first time UNC has beaten a No. 1 seed since 1994, a year in which it won its only national championship.
