Stanford ends UConn's winning streak

Nov 18, 2014 - 12:15 PM Stanford, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Stanford put an end to Connecticut's 47- game winning streak on Monday with an 88-86 overtime victory at Maples Pavilion.

It's the second time the Cardinal stopped a lengthy UConn run, as the Huskies' NCAA-record 90-game win streak was halted at Stanford in 2010.

Lili Thompson scored 24 points and Amber Orrange added 17 for the sixth-ranked Cardinal (2-0). Orrange tied the game for Stanford with a 3-pointer in the closing seconds of regulation and hit a jumper to put the Cardinal ahead for good with 1:39 left in overtime.

The top-ranked Huskies couldn't answer and Bonnie Samuelson hit a pair of free throws to extend the Cardinal lead with 20 seconds left. Saniya Chong's layup pulled UConn within one and Samuelson made 1-of-2 at the line with two seconds remaining to give the Huskies one last chance, but they failed to get a shot before the buzzer.

Breanna Stewart scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for UConn (1-1), which went 40-0 en route to a ninth national championship last season. Chong scored 20 points in defeat.
