No. 9 Oregon State women rout Portland 94-50
Nov 17, 2015 - 6:32 AM PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) Shooting is coming more naturally to Oregon State's Jamie Wiesner.Weisner led all scorers with 22 points and the ninth-ranked Beavers routed Portland 94-50 on Monday night. She has scored 46 points in her 39 minutes of playing time just two games into the season.
''Especially as a senior I feel like that's where I should be at, and I have those expectations of myself coming in, any way,'' Weisner said. ''I've been in this system three years now, going on four, and things should just come easy and flow. Give it to my teammates, finding me for open looks.''
Oregon State coach Scott Rueck, the Pac-12 coach of the year last season, said that last season was a turning point for Weisner, and it is clear she is now building on that.
''She's one of the best scorers and shooters in the country, there's no question,'' he said. ''Last year we all saw the game slow down for Jamie, with her decision making.''
Gabriella Hanson added 14 points, while Breanna Brown had a career-high 12 off the bench for the Beavers (2-0).
Freshman Ellie Woerner led Portland (1-1) with eight points on 2-of-7 shooting in the loss.
''I really liked our defense. I thought we kept them off the spots they wanted, made them miss a lot, and then we controlled the boards,'' Rueck said.
Oregon State, which was coming off a 110-45 season-opening victory over Longwood on Friday night, won a school record 27 games last season and claimed the program's first Pac-12 regular-season championship.
With only one starter departed from last year's team, were picked to again finish first in the conference in the league's annual media poll.
The Pilots, coming off a 73-54 victory over Willamette on Saturday, won just four games last season, and finished 2-16 in the West Coast Conference. The Pilots were picked in the preseason to against finish last in the league.
''Playing against a team that's bigger, faster, stronger, really challenges us to make sure we're truly playing the Portland way because they can expose some of those shortcuts that will work against lesser teams,'' coach Cheryl Sorenson.
The Beavers opened up the game on a 9-0 run before Woerner was able to split a pair of free throws to put Portland on the board.
OSU led 27-8 at the end of the first quarter. The Pilots committed a shot clock violation to start the second quarter. The Beavers took a 45-14 lead after Kolbie Orum hit a jumper and added a free throw. At halftime, the Beavers led Portland 47-16.
Oregon State took its largest lead of the night at 85-36 with 4:35 left. Rueck pulled his starters with about six minutes left in the game.
