Razorbacks roll over Lobos
Sep 11, 2011 - 4:38 AM Little Rock, AR (Sports Network) - Tyler Wilson passed for 259 yards and a touchdown, and six different players scored as No. 14 Arkansas had no trouble beating New Mexico, 52-3, on Saturday.New Mexico scored its only points on a field goal in the first quarter, but Marquel Wade returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown and Arkansas cruised for the second week in a row after routing Missouri State 51-7 last week.
Kody Walker had two rushing touchdowns for the Razorbacks (2-0) while Wilson and backup quarterback Brandon Mitchell also ran for scores. Cobi Hamilton and Jarius Wright hauled in TD passes.
Wilson came out in the second half because of concussion-like symptoms and Mitchell went 8-of-13 for 99 yards and a touchdown. Wilson was 18-of-26 with an interception.
Tarean Austin passed for 162 yards for the Lobos (0-2) who opened with a loss to Colorado State last week.
"Obviously very disappointed in the loss but Arkansas is a talented team and very deserving of their ranking, as it showed today," said New Mexico head coach Mike Locksley. "We didn't tackle very well on defense and offensively we could never sustain a drive to help get our defense off the field.
"That's a good football team. We need to show up and play better against good teams. We've still got a lot of work to do."
Setting the tone for a game that would see them rack up 632 yards on offense, Arkansas went 70 yards in four plays on the opening drive and took a 7-0 lead on Wilson's 12-yard pass to Wright.
Razorbacks kicker Zach Hocker missed a 48-yard field goal attempt, and James Aho made a 47-yarder at the other end to get New Mexico within 7-3.
But Wade got loose on the ensuing kickoff, taking it back for Arkansas' third return TD in two games.
"Special teams were huge again," said Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino. "Everyone did their jobs and got their blocks where they were supposed to be."
Wilson was intercepted early in the second quarter, but the Lobos punted and Hocker booted a 24-yard field goal. Walker capped the next Arkansas drive, a 70-yarder, with a one-yard run and Wilson finished off a 77-yard march with a seven-yard TD run to make it 31-3 at halftime.
Walker's one-yard touchdown came on the first Arkansas series in the second half -- the only points scored in the third quarter.
Mitchell went on to throw a 54-yard touchdown pass to Hamilton in the fourth quarter and also scored on a 14-yard run later.
