Morris throws 3 TDs as Miami downs Georgia Tech
Oct 6, 2013 - 2:09 AM Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Stephen Morris had three touchdown passes as No. 14 Miami-Florida took a 45-30 victory over Georgia Tech on Saturday.Morris was 17-for-22 for 324 yards and two interceptions, while Allen Hurns caught four passes for 108 yards and a score for the Hurricanes (5-0, 1-0 ACC), who got 184 yards on 22 carries from Duke Johnson.
Dallas Crawford had a pair of touchdown runs in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
"This was a big win," said Crawford. "It's a conference game but more importantly, to see our team fight back, to see our defense force turnovers and our offense fight back, that's what we needed."
Vad Lee had just 63 yards on 5-of-13 passing and threw a critical fourth quarter interception for the Yellow Jackets (3-2, 2-2), who have dropped their past two games. David Sims had two touchdowns and 77 yards on 16 carries.
"Have to give them credit, they made plays," said Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson. "When they had to have big plays, they made them. When they tried to keep the ball away and run the clock out, we had a hard time tackling the backs."
Holding a seven-point edge, Miami saw its lead cut to one point on a 6-yard touchdown run from Sims with 10:38 to play, but the holder bobbled the snap and the extra point was no good, making it a 24-23 game.
The Hurricanes came right back down the field with an 8-play, 66-yard drive that saw Crawford punch the ball in from three yards out for a 31-23 advantage with 7:15 left.
The Jackets came back down the field and got to the Miami 38, but Lee was picked off by Rayshawn Jenkins on fourth down and Crawford took a handoff up the middle and in from 18 yards out for a 38-23 lead with 1:46 to play.
Justin Thomas was then picked off by Ladarius Gunter and he went the distance on a 30-yard score for a 45-23 lead.
Tim Byerly made the game respectable with a 15-yard touchdown run and 10 seconds showing on the clock to cap the scoring.
Georgia Tech started the game with the ball and held it for close to six minutes on a 12-play, 75-yard drive that saw Sims find the end zone from seven yards out for a 7-0 lead.
Miami quickly answered as Morris went deep down the middle and found Phillip Dorsett for a 40-yard score.
The Yellow Jackets came right back with an 11-play drive that stalled at the Miami 28 with Harrison Butker putting the ball through the uprights from 45 yards out for a 10-7 lead with 2:47 left in the first.
Johnson fumbled a carry on Miami's ensuing possession and Georgia Tech recovered near midfield. Three plays later, Charles Perkins took the ball in from 31 yards out for a 17-7 lead with 53 seconds left in the first.
Miami cut the deficit to three points with 8:15 to play in the half as Morris and Clive Walford got together on a 4-yard score, and Matt Goudis' 24-yard field goal right before the break sent the game into halftime tied.
The Hurricanes took their first lead of the game late in the third quarter, as Morris sent a pass to the left for Allen Hurns, who broke a tackle and raced into the end zone for a 69-yard score and a 24-17 lead.
