Waters shines as K-State blitzes Texas Tech

Oct 5, 2014 - 7:19 AM Manhattan, KS (SportsNetwork.com) - Jake Waters accounted for five Kansas State touchdowns, including four through the air, as the 23rd-ranked Wildcats torched Texas Tech, 45-13, on Saturday.

Waters ended up 24-of-31 for 290 yards passing, and racked up 105 yards on 17 carries for the Wildcats (4-1, 2-0 Big 12), who have scored at least 30 points in all of their 2014 victories.

"We got in a rhythm pretty early," Waters said. "We had good plays and good drives most of the time."

Curry Sexton and Tyler Lockett each caught a pair of TD passes, with the former totaling 128 yards on nine grabs and the latter contributing 125 yards on a game-high 12 catches.

Davis Webb completed 22-of-43 attempts for 247 yards and two scores for the Red Raiders (2-3, 0-2), who have dropped three in a row. Webb also was picked off a career-worst four times.

"We did not make plays and did not protect, so it was overall just not very good," said Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury.

Jakeem Grant recorded 90 yards and two TDs on seven receptions, while DeAndre Washington was limited to 27 yards on seven rushes.

Morgan Burns picked off Webb in the end zone on the first possession of the contest, then Waters found Sexton for a 48-yard TD connection on the eighth play of the ensuing drive for the only score of the opening quarter.

Waters put the hosts up 14-0 early in the second on his 4-yard run, then after Travis Green stepped in front of another Webb offering, Matthew McCrane's 27- yard field goal boosted K-State's lead to 17.

Webb and Grant combined for a 22-yard scoring pass on the Red Raiders' next touch, and the hosts ended the first half up 24-7 as Lockett added a 15-yard TD catch.

Waters was stopped for no gain on 4th-and-1 from the TTU 21 to start the second half, but the visitors followed with a three-and-out ahead of Lockett's 14-yard touchdown catch in the third put the Wildcats up 31-7 after three quarters.

Grant posted a 19-yard scoring reception early in the fourth but the conversion pass failed.

The Wildcats turned around and scored on their next two series, with Sexton recording a 3-yard TD grab to cap an eight-play drive, then DeMarcus Robinson's 2-yard run to paydirt.

Game Notes

Kansas State has won each of the last four meetings, but only seven of the 15 all-time matchups with Texas Tech ... Lockett now has 21 touchdown receptions, third place on KSU's all-time list, and his 11th performance of 100-or-more receiving yards set a new program mark, eclipsing the previous record held by Jordy Nelson and Quincy Morgan ... The Red Raiders defense sacked Waters three times in defeat.
