Baylor stays perfect with win over Texas
Oct 5, 2014 - 2:06 AM Austin, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Bryce Petty threw two touchdown passes and the seventh-ranked Baylor Bears shook off a sluggish first half in a 28-7 rout of the Texas Longhorns.Petty completed 7-of-22 passes for 111 yards for the Bears (5-0, 2-0 Big 12), who have started 5-0 in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1916 and 1917.
Shock Linwood carried the ball 28 times for 148 yards and a score for Baylor, which entered Saturday's game leading the FBS in scoring offense (56.8 points per game) and total offense (641 yards per game).
The Bears were limited to 389 yards of total offense.
"We knew that we had to just keep grinding it out," said Linwood. "Each play, just go out there and tempo them up and get them tired and that's how we got them."
Tyrone Swoopes connected on 16-of-34 passes for 144 yards and two interceptions for the Longhorns (2-3, 1-1). He also carried the ball 14 times for 40 yards.
Johnathan Gray rushed for 79 yards and one touchdown on 12 carries.
The special teams unit gave Baylor an early 7-0 lead. Nick Rose's 52-yard field goal attempt was blocked, and Terrell Burt raced 62 yards the other way for a touchdown.
Texas moved the ball to the Baylor 29-yard line on the ensuing possession, but Swoopes threw an incomplete pass on 4th-and-6.
Swoopes was intercepted by Orion Stewart with 30 seconds left in the first quarter. Baylor, however, failed to do much on offense and was forced to punt.
The Bears finally started to move the ball on their next possession. This time around, Petty was stopped short on 4th-and-goal from the Texas 1. Ironically, the Longhorns' ensuing drive stalled at the Baylor 1 when Swoopes fumbled.
The Bears' special teams made another big play in the third quarter.
Punter Spencer Roth ran for 19 yards and a first down on a fake punt. Three plays later, Petty and Antwan Goodley hooked up for a 30-yard score.
"The fake punt should have never happened," said Texas coach Charlie Strong. "We had two guys that should have been just going ... to check the punter and then he just pulls it down because we had a return set up and he just threw it down and ran right behind the defenders."
The Bears put the game away in the fourth. Linwood's 1-yard TD run and Corey Coleman's 30-yard touchdown catch made it 28-0.
Texas avoided the shutout when Gray scored with 2:14 to play.
