North Carolina runs all over No. 25 Duke
Nov 21, 2014 - 5:31 AM Durham, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Marquise Williams threw two touchdown passes and ran for two more, leading the North Carolina Tar Heels to a 45-20 victory over the 25th-ranked Duke Blue Devils.Williams completed 18-of-27 passes for 276 yards for the Tar Heels (6-5, 4-3 ACC), who became bowl eligible for the second consecutive season and sixth time in the last seven years. The junior quarterback also carried the ball 21 times for 98 yards.
T.J. Logan rushed for 116 yards and one touchdown on 18 carries for North Carolina, which racked up 315 yards on the ground. Ryan Switzer caught three passes for 109 yards.
"I think we finally put together a complete game in all three phases -- offensively, defensively and special teams," said North Carolina coach Larry Fedora. "Other than the three turnovers we had offensively, it couldn't have been a more solid game for us."
Anthony Boone connected on 22-of-40 passes for 262 yards, two touchdowns and an interception for the Blue Devils (8-3, 4-3), who have lost two in a row.
Georgia Tech will represent the Coastal Division in the conference title game due to Duke's loss on Thursday.
The Tar Heels quickly gained momentum, forcing a turnover on Duke's first possession of the game. Justin Thomason stripped the ball from Thomas Sirk and North Carolina's Jeff Schoettmer recovered.
North Carolina capitalized with a 12-play, 78-yard drive that Quinshad Davis capped with a 3-yard TD catch. The highlight of the march was Logan's 22-yard catch on 3rd-and-5.
The ball continued to bounce in favor of the Tar Heels when Boone fumbled. Tim Scott scooped up the loose ball and raced 10 yards the other way for a touchdown.
"We made mistakes early. They capitalized on our mistakes," said Boone. "We usually play mistake-free football, taking care of the football on offense, and they did a good job of capitalizing and creating turnovers."
Already facing a 14-0 deficit, the Blue Devils went for it on 4th-and-3 from the UNC 47. Jamison Crowder's 31-yard catch set up Issac Blakeney's 10-yard TD catch.
But the Tar Heels responded with another first-quarter touchdown. Logan's knee was down at the 1-yard line following a 47-yard run. The Duke defense held strong over the next three plays, but Williams hooked up with Mack Hollins on fourth down.
North Carolina extended its lead to 28-7 early in the second quarter. Switzer's 45-yard catch ignited a quick drive that Williams capped with a 1- yard TD run.
Boone was intercepted by M.J. Stewart just three plays into the second half. The Tar Heels followed with a 15-play, 68-yard drive that Logan capped with a 1-yard TD run.
Thomas Moore added a 30-yard field goal on the next North Carolina possession. Crowder responded with an 18-yard TD catch to get Duke within 38-14.
Sirk and Williams scored in the fourth quarter.
