Defense carries Dolphins past Jags
Oct 26, 2014 - 11:16 PM Jacksonville, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Louis Delmas and Brent Grimes both returned interceptions for touchdowns to highlight the Miami Dolphins' 27-13 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.Miami (4-3) won back-to-back games for the first time this season in spite of an offense that sputtered most of the day.
Lamar Miller totaled 99 yards from scrimmage, while Ryan Tannehill was held to 196 yards with a touchdown and an interception through the air.
Blake Bortles was unable to build off earning his first win as a starter last week against the Browns. The rookie signal-caller completed 18-of-34 passes for 221 yards and a touchdown but turned it over three times, including two costly interceptions that directly led to 14 Miami points.
"I have to continue to battle. It's going to happen," Bortles said of his poor play. "I have to move on and not let it happen again."
Denard Robinson ran for 108 yards on 18 carries while Allen Robinson caught a late touchdown pass for the Jaguars (1-7), who trailed 10-3 at halftime despite holding a 219-56 advantage in yards.
Bortles' first pass of the second half sailed across the field and hung up long enough for Grimes to step in front of Cecil Shorts. Grimes easily made the interception and went 22 yards the other way for a TD.
Josh Scobee connected from 40 yards out to bring Jacksonville within 17-6, but a terrific 50-yard catch by Mike Wallace along the sideline set up another Miami touchdown that broken the game open.
After Miller rumbled 30 yards down to the Jacksonville 3-yard line, Tannehill found Rishard Matthews in the flat for a back-breaking score.
Caleb Sturgis' 29-yard field goal and Allen Robinson's 48-yard TD catch provided the only points in the fourth quarter.
The Jaguars dominated everything but the scoreboard in the first half. They drove into Miami territory each of their first five possessions and came away with a total of three points.
Scobee had a 48-yard field goal try blocked on the opening march, and a holding penalty negated his successful 46-yarder later in the first quarter.
On the first play of the second, Bortles was rolling to his left and threw against his body directly to Delmas, who went untouched for an 81-yard defensive score.
"There are times during the season when one unit needs to pick up another unit, and I think that's what happened today," Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin said.
Jacksonville got on the board on Scobee's 30-yard field goal but came away empty on another promising drive when Bortles was stripped from behind by Jelani Jenkins.
Delmas recovered the fumble at the Miami 23-yard line, and the offense finally got moving after totaling an embarrassing four yards to that point.
Sturgis capped a 11-play, 52-yard drive with a 43-yard field goal just before the break.
