Bengals edge Cardinals
Aug 25, 2014 - 3:52 AM Glendale, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Terence Newman returned an interception for a touchdown and the Cincinnati Bengals kicked four field goals en route to a 19-13 preseason victory over the Arizona Cardinals.Andy Dalton completed 13-of-21 passes for 157 yards for Cincinnati, which won for the first time this preseason. Mohamed Sanu and A.J. Green both caught five passes for 70 and 53 yards, respectively, in the triumph.
Mike Nugent and Quinn Sharp, who are competing for the starting kicker job, both made two field goals.
Cardinals starter quarterback Carson Palmer struggled to the tune of just 92 yards and an interception on 7-of-19 passing. Drew Stanton had more luck in the second half, throwing for 108 yards and the lone offensive TD of the game.
Midway through the first quarter, Palmer dropped back on 3rd-and-7 and fired to his right, but Newman jumped the pass and sprinted down the left sideline for a 7-0 Bengals lead.
The only points Arizona mustered during the first half was Jay Feely's 24-yard field goal. Nugent countered with a 48-yarder and ended the half with a 36- yard kick to send the Bengals into halftime leading 13-3.
The Cardinals fought back to tie the score, with Chandler Catanzaro's 23-yard kick late in the third pulling them within a touchdown. After a quick three- and-out, Stanton tossed a 30-yard touchdown to John Brown, who made an acrobatic diving catch in the back of the end zone.
Jason Campbell led the Bengals down the field on the opening series of the fourth quarter, which ended on Sharp's go-ahead 34-yard field goal. The rookie from Oklahoma State added a 51-yarder on the next Cincy possession.
