PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- The Pittsburgh Steelers open a three-game homestand against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, but they may have to do it without starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.
Roethlisberger underwent an MRI exam on Tuesday after injuring his right shoulder in Monday's 23-6 win over the Washington Redskins.
Roethlisberger suffered the injury while scoring on a quarterback sneak with 35 seconds left in the first half. He promptly ran into the locker room with team trainers for X-rays and did not play in the second half.
He was replaced by Byron Leftwich, who finished 7-of-10 for 129 yards and led the Steelers on a touchdown drive to start the second half.
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin on Tuesday said it is too soon to know Roethlisberger's status for Sunday's game against the Indianapolis Colts.
Roethlisberger's shoulder has been bothering him throughout the season; he originally injured it in the opener against the Houston Texans.
Peyton Manning threw a pair of touchdowns and Adam Vinatieri kicked a game-winning field goal as the Colts posted an 18-15 victory over the New England Patriots last Sunday.
Anthony Gonzalez caught both of Manning's TD passes, helping Indianapolis avoid its first three-game losing streak since October 21-November 3, 2002.
A former Patriot, Vinatieri connected on a 52-yarder with 8:09 left in the fourth and safety Bob Sanders celebrated his return to the lineup with a game-clinching interception.
It was a virtual must-win game for the Colts, who trail the undefeated Tennessee Titans in the AFC South by four games and likely will be resigned to playing for one of the two wild cards berths.
