Coyotes rally to beat Red Wings in SO
Mar 6, 2011 - 7:52 AM Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Radim Vrbata scored the only goal of the shootout as the Phoenix Coyotes rallied from a three-goal deficit in the third period to take a 5-4 win over the Detroit Red Wings.Vrbata was the second shooter for Phoenix and he lifted a backhand past Jimmy Howard. Jiri Hudler and Todd Bertuzzi then banged both of their attempts off the goalpost as Phoenix held on for the win.
Kyle Turris had a goal and an assist while Martin Hanzal, Ray Whitney and Mikkel Boedker all lit the lamp for the Coyotes, who snapped a five-game slide.
Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 22 shots in the win, which started a three-game homestand for Phoenix.
"It's so tight (in the Western Conference) that you can't afford losing points," said Vrbata. "So now we have a homestand where we need to really get our points."
Darren Helm had a goal and an assist and Drew Miller, Valtteri Filppula and Johan Franzen all scored for the Red Wings, who have dropped their past three. Howard made 32 saves in defeat.
"There gets to be a point in your season where you gotta decide if you think you're a championship-caliber team that there's a right way to play," said Detroit head coach Mike Babcock. "And unless you get 23 guys doing it the same way and wanting to do it, nothing's going to happen."
Trailing by three goals to start the third, the Coyotes started their comeback at the 2:32 mark when Boedker took advantage of a Red Wing miscue. Howard stopped a dump-in behind his net and sent the puck out to a teammate, who then sent an errant pass that Boedker picked up in the slot and slammed home.
At the 14:34 mark, it was a 4-3 game as Turris sent a pass from the left side to the front where Whitney's turnaround shot got past Howard for his 13th goal of the season.
Phoenix then completed the comeback with 1:57 to play in regulation as a point shot from Vrbata saw Hanzal sweep home the garbage.
Detroit scored just 2:04 in as Miller threw a slow shot on net from the top of the left circle on the fly that somehow made it past Bryzgalov.
A power-play goal from Franzen, his 27th tally of the season, with 3:03 to play in the first gave Detroit a 2-0 lead.
However, the Coyotes got one back less than two minutes later as a blast from Adrian Aucoin in the high slot was stopped and Turris buried the rebound from the right side.
The Red Wings re-established their two-goal lead with 4:33 to play in the second on Filppula's 13th of the season.
Helm gave Detroit a 4-1 lead with just 12.8 seconds to play in the second on a short-handed score. He caught up to a puck along the boards in the right corner and brought it out front. From there, he snapped a shot past Bryzgalov for his ninth goal of the season.
