Bruins edge Sabres in SO to conclude regular season
Apr 8, 2012 - 2:03 AMBoston erased a 3-1 deficit in the third period with goals from Tyler Seguin -- his second of the game -- and Brad Marchand 2:25 apart.
In the shootout, Bergeron, whose second helper gave him 400 career points, stickhandled and slipped the puck through the legs of Buffalo's Jhonas Enroth.
Tim Thomas made 25 saves for Boston (49-29-4), which will host the seventh-seeded Washington Capitals in the first round of the playoffs.
Brad Boyes matched Seguin with two goals and Jason Pominville added the other Buffalo (39-32-11) tally. Enroth turned aside 37 shots in just his third appearance since mid-January.
The Sabres will miss the postseason for the first time in three years.
Seguin opened the scoring 3:15 into the second period. Bergeron knocked the puck away from a charging Pominville in the neutral zone and Seguin one-timed his pass from just outside the crease.
Boyes tied it later in the middle stanza, then pounced on a rebound in the slot and backhanded it past a diving Thomas to put Buffalo in front just after the seven-minute mark of the third.
Pominville lit the lamp 1:44 later to give the Sabres a two-goal advantage.
But Seguin cashed in a power play at 9:56, and Marchand lifted a backhander over Enroth from the slot at 12:21.
"We had a tough start, digging out by a couple goals, but we showed the character that we need going into the playoffs," Marchand said.
