Canucks strengthen hold atop West, down Ducks in shootout

Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Alexandre Burrows, Alexander Edler and Maxim Lapierre all scored in the shootout, lifting the Vancouver Canucks to their seventh straight win, 5-4 over the Anaheim Ducks.

Burrows tallied twice in regulation while Lapierre and Chris Higgins also lit the lamp for Vancouver, which kept pace with the New York Rangers, who defeated Philadelphia 5-3 Tuesday, in the race for the President's Trophy. Both teams have 109 points with two contests remaining.

Dan Hamhius and Henrik Sedin each registered two assists for the Canucks, who are three points ahead of St. Louis for the best mark in the Western Conference.

Roberto Luongo allowed four goals on 15 shots before being pulled in favor of Cory Schneider in the second period. Schneider stopped all nine shots he saw.

"We made a few mistakes defensively where they got a lot of chances in tight and we can't blame Lou (Luongo) for either one of those. It's on us players to be there for him and we didn't do a good job," Sedin said of his team's defensive effort in front of Luongo.

Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry, Rod Pelley and Devante Smith-Pelly scored in regulation for Anaheim, which has lost three straight contests. Bobby Ryan dished out three assists.

Jonas Hiller stopped 35 shots in defeat.

"I thought our guys did a great job of hanging in there and weathering the storm," Getzlaf said. "We got the thing into overtime and got a point."

Trailing by two goals near the halfway point of the second period, Vancouver tied the contest with a pair of tallies before the end of the stanza.

Following Hamhuis' slap shot from the top of the right circle, Burrows pounced on the loose disc and put home the rebound to make it 4-3.

LaPierre tied the contest with 1:27 remaining in the second as he threw a shot on net from the right boards, which handcuffed Hiller and sailed into the back of the net.

Neither team tallied in the third period, although Vancouver outshot Anaheim 12-1 in the frame.

The teams traded four goals in a 5:01 span near the end of the opening period.

Getzlaf and Burrows scored on a pair of wristers before Perry gave the Ducks a 2-1 advantage with a backhander on the power play. Higgins tied the game at two as he put home Sedin's behind-the-net pass.

Anaheim netted the first two tallies of the second, chasing Luongo out of the contest at the 7:03 mark of the stanza.

Ryan picked up the loose disc along the left boards before feeding Pelley for a one-timer in the slot with a backhanded pass.

Once again from the left boards, Ryan threw a pass in front for Smith-Pelly, who tipped home the disc beneath the pads of Luongo.

Game Notes

LaPierre has three goals and six points in his past five contests...Anaheim was 1-for-3 on the power play while Vancouver finished 0-for-5 on the man advantage.
