Ducks beat Oilers, clinch Pacific Division title

Apr 2, 2015 - 5:42 AM Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Andrew Cogliano scored on a penalty shot, Frederik Andersen stopped 22 shots, and the Anaheim Ducks clinched the Pacific Division title for the third consecutive season thanks to a 5-1 result over Edmonton at Honda Center.

Francois Beauchemin added a goal and one assist while Nate Thompson, Corey Perry and Simon Despres also tallied for the Ducks, who claimed their fourth division crown in franchise history by winning their fourth straight game and eighth in 10 overall.

"We've put ourselves in a good spot," Cogliano said. "We have a good team and it speaks to the coaching staff and organization, but it's just one part of the puzzle."

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins lit the lamp for the Oilers, who had won three in a row and four of five coming in. Ben Scrivens yielded all five goals on 27 shots in defeat.

Cogliano had his stick shatter thanks to a slash by an Edmonton defenseman Oscar Klefbom with 5:14 gone in the third period and was subsequently awarded a penalty shot.

He converted with a shot under the crossbar after drawing Scrivens across the crease for his first career free-chance marker to wrap up the contest.

Beauchemin opened the scoring less than four minutes in by joining an odd-man rush and beating Scrivens from between the circles, and Thompson doubled the Anaheim edge one second shy of the first period's middle point on a backhander.

"We have to give them credit, they played a smart hockey game," Oilers coach Todd Nelson said of the Ducks. "I thought we got off to a pretty good start, then all of a sudden we have a bad line change... and they capitalize."

Perry followed up his own rebound and flipped the second try home at the left side for a 3-0 game at 8:33 of the second and Despres slipped one home from the outer edge of the left circle at 12:06.

Nugent-Hopkins finally put the Oilers on the board with 2:55 remaining.

Game Notes

Beauchemin's assist on Perry's score was his 126th with Ducks, moving him past Oleg Tverdovsky into second place on the franchise list for defensemen ... Cogliano's last penalty-shot attempt was a miss on March 6, 2013 against the Coyotes ... Ducks forward Jakob Silfverberg picked up three assists.
