Canes snap own skid, Leafs' win streak
Dec 19, 2014 - 4:04 AM Raleigh, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - The Carolina Hurricanes snapped a six-game losing streak, scoring two special-teams goals in a 4-1 win over the red-hot Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday night. While Toronto eyed its longest winning streak in more than 11 years, Carolina jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals from Chris Terry and Justin Faulk, who scored while the Hurricanes were short-handed.
Andrej Sekera's power play tally in the third period restored the two-goal lead and Cam Ward finished with 25 saves as the Hurricanes ended the 0-6 skid.
"It's been a while," said Ward. "The guys played great. We got off to a good start. To be able to score the first two goals was a relief."
Dion Phaneuf scored for the Maple Leafs, who had a six-game winning streak snapped and lost for just the third time in their last 13 (10-2-1).
They haven't won seven in a row since an eight-game streak from Nov. 22-Dec. 6, 2003.
Jonathan Bernier gave up three goals on 36 shots and had a personal four-game winning streak stopped.
"We got outworked," said Maple Leafs coach Randy Carlyle. "Then we finally got ourselves back into the hockey game and took ourselves right out of it."
Terry scored Carolina's first goal 11:54 into the game on a deflection in the crease after Eric Staal wheeled around and sent the puck on net from the left circle.
The Hurricanes scored again 1:49 later while Zach Boychuk was off for interference, taking a 2-0 lead when Faulk finished off Patrick Dwyer's pass on a 2-on-2 short-handed rush.
Phaneuf got the Maple Leafs on the board 16:55 into the second period with a slap shot from above the left circle that beat Ward to the far side.
Sekera restored Carolina's two-goal lead with 8:55 left in the third period, whipping a wrist shot past Bernier from the right circle for his first of the season.
Elias Lindholm added an empty-net goal down the stretch.
