Halak, Islanders thump Avs

Nov 12, 2014 - 4:26 AM Uniondale, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Islanders had payback on their minds when they took on the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday.

Jaroslav Halak posted his second straight shutout and the Islanders claimed a 6-0 decision to avenge an earlier loss to the Avalanche.

The Islanders traveled to Colorado on Oct. 30 and lost 5-0, their biggest margin of defeat this season.

But Tuesday was a much different outcome thanks to Halak's 20 saves and a balanced offensive attack.

Halak kept Arizona off the board in a 1-0 win on Saturday. Tuesday's victory was the 150th of his career. It was also his 32nd career shutout.

Nick Leddy, Anders Lee, Travis Hamonic, Nikolay Kulemin, Casey Cizikas and Ryan Strome each scored for New York, which has won four in a row.

"It's a team effort, same as last game," Halak said. "They blocked a lot of shots, just like they did last game. Everybody was tracking back and we didn't give up many odd-man rushes."

Semyon Varlamov made 40 saves for the Avs, who fell to 4-8-5 on the season.

Leddy scored from the left circle 1:33 into the game.

A fortunate bounce led to Lee's power-play goal at 5:21. Leddy's dump in caromed off a stanchion out in front of Varlamov, who misplayed the puck to Lee.

Hamonic made it 3-0 at 6:38 of the second when his blast from the right point got past Varlamov.

Kulemin beat Varlamov with a backhander on a breakaway at the 11:32 mark.

Cizikas and Strome each scored in the third.

"I'll say this: They played really well. I have to give them credit," Colorado coach Patrick Roy said of the Islanders. "They were really intense. They were jumping at pucks, putting pucks at the net. It was a game where we were not at our best, without a doubt, and we know we need to be better."

Game Notes

New York defenseman Johnny Boychuk returned to the lineup after missing one game with a lower-body injury. He ended with one assist ... The Islanders went 1-for-6 on the power play, while the Avs went 0-for-3.
