Flames-Oilers Preview

Oct 8, 2009 - 4:06 AM By KATE HEDLIN STATS Writer

Calgary (3-0-0) at Edmonton (1-1-0), 9:30 p.m. EDT

Following the departure of their leading goal scorer, the Calgary Flames are counting on Jarome Iginla to put up big numbers.

Iginla looks to build off his first goal of the season when he and the Flames visit the Edmonton Oilers for the second time in less than a week.

Calgary (3-0-0) is off to its best start since 1993-94, when it opened with four straight wins. The Flames have been especially impressive on offense, scoring 13 goals while going 5 for 7 on the power play. Perhaps most impressive, 10 different players have scored at least once.

"Everybody likes to score and everybody likes to be part of it," said Craig Conroy, who has chipped in two assists. "A lot of years I've been around here, it's been a one man show in Iggy. This year, we really talked a lot about how we can get a lot of contributions from different guys."

Last season, Iginla was Calgary's leading scorer with 89 points, but the Flames were expecting more from him after losing Michael Cammalleri, who had a team-high 39 goals. Iginla had 35.

The Flames captain was held to an assist on an open-net goal in the season-opening win over Vancouver and played less than 16 minutes in a 4-3 victory over Edmonton on Saturday, before scoring with 4:49 remaining in the second period of Tuesday's 4-3 win over Montreal.

"It's a compliment that ... there's that pressure to go," Iginla said. "But it's better those questions when we're winning. It's all part of it. It feels really good the start that we've had."

Iginla and the Flames look to extend their unbeaten start against the Oilers (1-1-0), who bounced back from Saturday's loss with a 5-4 shootout win over Dallas on Tuesday.

Edmonton's loss at home to Calgary was especially disheartening. Free agent acquisition Nikolai Khabibulin gave up a goal to David Moss with 48.7 seconds remaining after the Oilers had rallied from a 3-1 deficit.

Khabibulin recovered to record 30 saves and stop all three shots in the shootout Tuesday to help Edmonton win 5-4. The victory was the 300th of his career.

"That was a hard way to lose that first game so it was good to see the team rewarded tonight," Khabibulin said. "It's nice to hit that milestone but right now I am just happy that we won the game. I'll try to build on it and make sure I don't stop at 300, I guess."

Denis Grebeshkov tied the game early in the third period and Ales Hemsky scored in the shootout. The Oilers were 2 for 4 on the power play after going 0 for 4 with the man advantage against the Flames.

Although the Oilers beat the Stars, coach Pat Quinn is looking for his team to get off to faster starts. After trailing 2-1 going into the second period against Calgary, Edmonton managed only six shots in the first period Tuesday and was outshot 34-24 in the game.

"We did enough scoring to get back in it," Quinn said. "But from a coaching standpoint, I still feel we have a lot of work to do."

The Flames and Oilers will meet for the third time this month in Calgary on Oct. 24.
