Red Wings look to remain atop NHL

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- In search of their third straight Presidents' Trophy, the Detroit Red Wings begin a home-and-home series with the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday.

The schedule could not be more favorable for the Red Wings, who are 14-0-1 against the Blackhawks since a loss on December 28, 2003. Six of the wins have come this season.

The Red Wings (49-19-12) hold a one-point lead over the Buffalo Sabres (51-21-7), but the Sabres have a game in hand. Buffalo hosts the Boston Bruins on Thursday.

Detroit has a three-point lead over Anaheim (47-20-13) in the Western Conference and a four-point lead over Nashville (49-23-8) in the division.

The Red Wings posted a 3-0 victory over Columbus on Tuesday to sweep a home-and-home series. Dominik Hasek stopped all 35 shots he faced and recorded his 76th career shutout.

The Blackhawks have won three in a row after a six-game losing streak. Chicago posted a 3-2 victory over Nashville on Tuesday as Jeff Hamilton scored the decisive goal in the shootout.
