Toews' SHG in OT sends Blackhawks past Preds
Oct 19, 2014 - 6:36 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Jonathan Toews' short-handed tally with 1:34 remaining in overtime sent Chicago past Nashville by a 2-1 count at United Center. The game appeared to be tipped in the visitors' favor when Patrick Sharp was whistled for a tripping infraction 1:50 into the extra session.
But the Chicago captain sent 21,640 paying customers into a frenzy by deflecting the puck away from a Nashville defenseman at the point, racing up the left wing and beating Carter Hutton with a low shot through the pads.
"Just lucky to get a second effor on that one because the first effort didn't go in," Toews said.
Johnny Oduya provided an early score for the Blackhawks, who were coming off a 2-1 overtime loss to Calgary on Wednesday. Corey Crawford made 19 stops.
Shea Weber provided the sole offense for the Predators, who hadn't surrendered a goal while up a man in the previous 105 games. Hutton took the loss despite turning away 35 pucks.
"It wasn't our best early on, but we stuck to it," Nashvile head coach Peter Laviolette said. "I thought in the third period, our guys tried to get it done."
Oduya lit the lamp just 1:49 into the contest on an uncontested blast from the left circle, then the Preds evened things on their first shot of the game -- a Weber slapper from the bottom of the left circle on a power play at 11:17.
Hutton kept his club even with 11 saves in the second period, while both teams flew at each other in search of the go-ahead marker in the third. Crawford made 12 saves and Hutton 11 in the final period, including twin stops on Sharp and Marian Hossa in the last 25 seconds of regulation.
