Kings eye perfect homestand vs. Blue Jackets

Oct 26, 2014 - 1:38 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Los Angeles Kings will try to post the best six-game homestand in franchise history on Sunday afternoon as they welcome the Columbus Blue Jackets to Staples Center.

After beginning the season with consecutive losses, the Kings have won the first five contests of their homestand. Los Angeles has never before posted a 6-0-0 homestand, the closest being a 5-0-1 residency in 1990-91.

Goaltender Jonathan Quick set a franchise record with his 33rd career shutout in Thursday's 2-0 win over Buffalo. Quick made 29 saves to pass Rogie Vachon on the club's all-time list.

Quick has given up just two goals over his last four games, stopping 143 of the 145 shots he has faced over that time.

"I think he was solid," Kings coach Darryl Sutter said of Quick. "He made the saves when he had to, covered pucks well, and played the pucks well with his defensemen."

Jeff Carter had a goal and an assist and Anze Kopitar also scored for the Kings, who have killed off 17 straight penalties over their winning streak.

Kings forward Marian Gaborik will not be able to face his former team tonight because of an upper-body injury. Los Angeles acquired Gaborik from Columbus on March 5 of last season for forward Matt Frattin and two draft picks.

Gaborik appeared in 34 games over parts of two seasons with the Blue Jackets after they got him from the New York Rangers in April of 2013. He had nine goals and 22 points with Columbus after that trade and posted five goals and 16 points with the Kings in 2013-14.

Of course, the deal paid off big time for Los Angeles as Gaborik posted 14 goals and 22 points in 26 playoff games in helping the franchise win the Stanley Cup.

Columbus is 1-2-0 on a four-game road trip and is coming off a 4-1 loss in Anaheim on Friday. Scott Hartnell scored his first goal since joining the Blue Jackets and Sergei Bobrovsky gave up three goals on 33 shots faced.

"It's tough to get shots when you're playing defense all night and chasing the puck around," said Hartnell. "We needed to play the puck more and it just seemed like we spent the whole night chasing it."

Columbus failed in its attempt to win two straight for the second time this season.

The Kings have won five of seven and nine of their last 12 versus the Blue Jackets, while Columbus has dropped four in a row and eight of its past 11 in Los Angeles.
