Red Wings, Capitals hope to rebound in DC
Oct 29, 2014 - 1:59 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Washington Capitals and Detroit Red Wings will both be looking to rebound from their second regulation loss of the season on Wednesday night as the two clubs clash in D.C.The Capitals picked up their two setbacks on a three-game road trip, dropping games to Edmonton and Vancouver around a victory against Calgary. They closed the trip with a 4-2 loss to the Canucks, falling to 4-2-2 on the year.
Marcus Johansson scored and Liam O'Brien added his first career tally for the Caps, who had won four of six coming in. Justin Peters stopped 30 shots in defeat, but was victimized for three goals in a 1:47 span late in the second period.
"They came out strong and we were a little flat," Peters said.
Braden Holtby expects to start for the Capitals tonight and has won both of his previous career starts against the Red Wings, posting a 2.89 goals against average and .914 save percentage.
Washington has won four straight as the host over Detroit, which hasn't picked up a victory in D.C. since Dec. 9, 2005.
The Red Wings, also 4-2-2 on the season, are coming off their first regulation loss since Oct. 11 as they were bested 4-2 in Philadelphia on Saturday. Detroit had won three of four overall going in, with each of its previous three contests reaching overtime.
The Red Wings managed to edge the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 in extra time last Thursday, but only got goals from Riley Sheahan and Pavel Datsyuk in the loss to the Flyers.
Jonas Gustavsson made 13 stops in defeat.
"You're going to have breakdowns in games -- that's the way it goes. But I thought we did tons of good stuff," said Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock. "You know when I go through it, the other night we didn't play as good against Pittsburgh, and then in the end we get ourselves two points."
Jimmy Howard will get the call for the Red Wings in net and is 2-1-2 with a 3.47 GAA and .871 save percentage in five previous starts against Washington.
Detroit forward Johan Franzen has missed four in a row due to a groin injury and is not expected back before the weekend. The Red Wings host the Los Angeles Kings on Friday.
