Devils tie game late, end SO futility
Oct 31, 2014 - 4:35 AM Newark, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - The New Jersey Devils' run of shootout futility is over.Jacob Josefson scored the lone goal in the skills competition, lifting the Devils to a 2-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday night.
New Jersey had lost an NHL-record 18 straight shootouts since beating the Jets on March 10, 2013.
"It was a classic head fake," Josefson said of his winner. "I went to the side and just tried to get it up."
Michael Ryder tied the game with 3:27 remaining in regulation, and Cory Schneider made 24 saves for the Devils, who picked up their first home win of the season.
Ondrej Pavelec stopped 27 shots for Winnipeg, which has picked up at least a point in three consecutive games (2-0-1).
"We played a pretty solid road game," Jets head coach Paul Maurice said.
New Jersey was going to have a power-play chance when Ryder was hooked by Mark Stuart after making a move around the defenseman. Ryder, however, kept control of the puck and moved it from the backhand to his forehand and beat Pavelec with a wrister while falling to his knees.
Pavelec made a glove save on Jaromir Jagr in the waning seconds to force overtime, then made a left pad save on the veteran's backhand try in the extra session.
The Jets opened the scoring on a delayed penalty. Blake Wheeler took a pass from Tobias Enstrom, flew past defenseman Marek Zidlicky on the left wing and tucked the puck inside the right post and left skate of Schneider at the 6:56 mark of the first period.
Patrik Elias had an opportunity on a New Jersey power play later in the first, but he was unable to lift the puck over a fallen Pavelec.
Winnipeg came close to extending its lead a couple times in the second period.
Wheeler couldn't finish a 2-on-1 with Evander Kane, who returned to the lineup after missing the previous eight games with a knee injury suffered in the season opener against Arizona on Oct. 9, and Mark Scheifele hit the post.
Schneider made a big stop on Scheifele a little over a minute into the third before the Winnipeg forward crashed into him.
Game Notes
Devils forward Mike Cammalleri (jaw) missed a second straight game ... Jets defenseman Zach Bogosian played after sitting out Tuesday's game against the Islanders with an upper-body injury.
