Kings use strong 2nd to down Panthers
Nov 19, 2014 - 6:59 AM Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jeff Carter tallied a goal and an assist and the Los Angeles Kings used a four-goal second period to top the Florida Panthers, 5-2, on Tuesday.Matt Greene and Robyn Regehr both posted their first goals of the season and Marian Gaborik and Dustin Brown also scored for the Kings, who have won six straight games at home against the Panthers.
"It's good to see Robyn and Greene score, they don't get much credit, and they can give you the blue collar every night," Kings head coach Darryl Sutter said. "They are our two most consistent defensemen for sure. It's always good to see them score."
Jonathan Quick turned aside 30 shots in the win.
Jimmy Hayes and Jussi Jokinen each scored for Florida, which has dropped five of its last seven games.
Roberto Luongo allowed all four second-period goals on 25 shots and Al Montoya stopped one shot during the third period.
"We really played well in the first period and obviously the second period was the difference in this hockey game," said Panthers head coach Gerard Gallant. "We just didn't respond until we got upset in the third period and we started to play a better game."
After a scoreless first, the Kings exploded for four goals in the second.
Brayden McNabb sent a slap pass down to Greene, who redirected the shot past Luongo from the right side for a 1-0 Kings lead 4:32 into the second.
The Kings increased their lead to 2-0 after Florida's Vincent Trocheck went off on a four-minute high-sticking infraction. Dwight King slipped a pass from below the goal line to Carter, who snapped a shot from the slot midway through the middle stanza.
Gaborik backhanded a shot past Luongo in tight for a power-play goal at 14:18 and Regehr snapped a shot under his glove for a 4-0 lead with eight seconds left in second.
Hayes whacked a rebound past Quick for a power-play goal two minutes into the final stanza to put Florida on the board.
Quick stopped Trochek's shot from the left circle, which deflected off a defender's stick, but Jokinen was present in front to wrist home the rebound 6:55 into the third to cut the deficit in half.
Brown's quick shot trickled through the legs of Montoya to cap the scoring with 3:11 to play.
