Helm scores twice as Red Wings beat Stars
Dec 5, 2014 - 5:47 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Darren Helm scored two goals and the Detroit Red Wings beat the Dallas Stars 5-2 on Thursday.Stephen Weiss had one goal and two assists for the Red Wings, who bounced back from a 4-3 loss to the Panthers on Tuesday. Pavel Datsyuk and Kyle Quincey each had one goal and an assist.
Jimmy Howard made 22 saves in the win.
"We wanted a bounce back after the way we played the other night," said Red Wings coach Mike Babcock. "We weren't very happy leaving the rink the other night about our work ethic, our compete and preparation.
"Tonight I thought we were good in all aspects. I thought we had some good games from guys and in the end we won the game."
Colton Sceviour and Tyler Seguin lit the lamp for the Stars, who have lost four in a row.
Jussi Rynnas, who was recalled by Dallas from the AHL on Wednesday, stopped 24-of-29 shots in his first NHL game since Feb. 19, 2013.
"We're not going to win with five goals (against) a night. No team is," said Stars coach Lindy Ruff.
The Red Wings drew first blood at the 3:58 mark of the first period. Helm's shot from along the goal line somehow snuck past Rynnas.
Sceviour tied things up 15 seconds later when he tipped in Jordie Benn's pass.
Weiss scored after a Dallas turnover at 11:14 of the opening stanza. Datsyuk added a backhanded goal on the power play at 18:52.
The Stars had a goal waved off at 7:08 of the second because Trevor Daley used his arm to bat the puck across the goal line. However, Dallas did score at the 14:26 mark when Seguin's blast from the point hit off a skate and got past Howard.
Quincey's first goal of the season gave Detroit a 4-2 lead at 7:39 of the third. His blast from the right point deflected off traffic in front and got past Rynnas.
Helm scored his second goal of the night with 6:53 left.
