Panthers edge Flyers in shootout
Dec 19, 2014 - 4:06 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Dave Bolland scored in the sixth round of the shootout to lift the Florida Panthers over the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 on Thursday night. The Panthers needed an NHL-record 20 rounds to pick up a shootout victory over the Washington Capitals on Tuesday.
Philadelphia's Jakub Voracek kept the shootout going when he scored in the third round. Florida's Brandon Pirri had scored in the first.
Scottie Upshall lit the lamp in regulation for the Panthers, who got 25 saves from Roberto Luongo.
"I thought we played a solid game, not a great game, but a solid game," said Panthers coach Gerard Gallant. "We were able to come out of here with two points in Philly and it's a big two points for us."
Voracek also scored the only goal for the Flyers, who fell to 0-5 in shootouts and have lost 10 straight dating back to last season. Steve Mason stopped 31- of-32 shots.
"I think we are playing good defensively, I really do," said Flyers coach Craig Berube. "I think our team game that way is good. I think we need to create more opportunities offensively."
The Panthers had a goal waved off at the 5:12 mark of the first period. Video review supported the referee's call on the ice that Sean Bergenheim's stick was above the height of the crossbar when he deflected the puck into the Philadelphia net.
Upshall scored a good goal at 9:37 when the puck deflected off his body and entered the net in a legal fashion, which replay confirmed. Tomas Kopecky's shot from along the left boards hit off Mason before going off Upshall.
Voracek scored off Pierre-Edouard Bellemare's pass from behind at the net at 4:07 of the middle stanza.
