Edler, Canucks edge Coyotes
Mar 23, 2015 - 4:26 AM Glendale, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Alexander Edler's power-play goal with 3:13 left in regulation was the deciding factor as the Vancouver Canucks topped the Arizona Coyotes 3-1 on Sunday.Yannick Weber and Henrik Sedin also lit the lamp for the Canucks, who have won four of their last five games. Jacob Markstrom made 24 saves in his first start since March 3.
"I thought we played pretty smart," Vancouver head coach Willie Desjardins said. "Other than a few minutes in the third period where things opened up, we played pretty well."
Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored the Coyotes' lone goal and Mike Smith turned aside 41 shots in the team's eighth straight loss.
"Everybody played hard and battled," said Ekman-Larsson. "We had a bad start and we didn't play well with the puck."
After Joe Vitale went off for tripping, Elder fired a shot from the top of the left circle. The puck rang off the near post, caromed off Smith's back and trickled over the goal line to put Vancouver ahead.
The Coyotes pulled Smith with over a minute to play, but Sedin scored on the vacated cage moments later to seal the win.
Weber started the scoring with 5:37 left in the first period. Daniel Sedin raced up along the left-wing boards and sent a quick pass toward the slot, where Weber jumped into the play and fired a shot past Smith.
Just over a minute later, Ekman-Larsson went coast-to-coast to tie the game. The young defenseman skated out of his zone, stickhandled through center ice and fired a shot on net. Markstrom made a glove stop, but Ekman-Larson roofed his second rebound attempt.
Vancouver outshot Arizona 12-6 in the middle stanza, but neither team scored as the game was tied heading into the third.
