Playoff-hopeful Kings aim to rebound in Edmonton

Apr 7, 2015 - 3:23 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Los Angeles Kings hope to secure a much-needed victory on Tuesday evening when they try to extend a 14-game series road point streak over the Edmonton Oilers.

The Kings dropped a 2-1 shootout decision to the Vancouver Canucks on Monday night, snapping a two-game win streak. They also fell to 3-15 this season in games that go beyond regulation.

The point did move Los Angeles into a tie with the Calgary Flames for third place in the Pacific Division with 93 points each, but the Flames own the current tiebreaker due to having two more non-shootout wins and they host the Arizona Coyotes tonight.

Both clubs have three games left to play and meet in Calgary on Thursday as the Kings finish off a three-game road trip.

Los Angeles trails the Winnipeg Jets by a point for the second wild card spot in the Western Conference as well. The Jets, who have three games left on their schedule, visit the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday night.

Dwight King scored an early goal for the Kings last night and Jonathan Quick made 37 saves, but he gave up the lone shootout tally when Chris Higgins beat him with a backhander in the third round. Eddie Lack sealed the win for the Canucks with a glove stop on Marian Gaborik.

"We got one point out of it," Los Angeles defenseman Drew Doughty said. "It could be big for us in the end.

The Kings are 11-0-3 in their past 14 games in Edmonton, having not a lost a regulation game there since Feb. 28, 2008.

Los Angeles also has won nine of its past 10 versus Edmonton overall, including an 8-2 win at home last Thursday. Gaborik had two goals and an assist, Jeff Carter also scored twice and Quick made 28 saves, improving to 14-1-5 versus the Oilers with a 1.56 goals against average and .939 save percentage in 20 meetings.

Ben Scrivens gave up five goals on 21 shots, while Tyler Bunz allowed three goals on 12 shots during the third period in his NHL debut for the Oilers.

That loss by Edmonton is part of a current three-game slide in which the club has been outscored 17-3. It also comes on the heels of a three-game win streak, but the Oilers failed to light the lamp last time out with a 4-0 loss to the Flames.

Scrivens stopped 25 pucks for the Oilers.

"They're an opportunistic team," said Oilers winger Taylor Hall. "We didn't get enough traffic to their net."

Hall shifted to center for the game as Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was unable to play due to a lower-body ailment. Nugent-Hopkins is day-to-day, but did not practice on Monday.

The Oilers sit 28th out of 30 teams in the NHL with 59 points, three ahead of the Coyotes. The Buffalo Sabres are last with 54 points.
