ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- The Olli Jokinen era got off to a rousing start.
After scoring a goal and leading the Phoenix Coyotes to a win in their 2008-09 opener, Jokinen and his new team visit the Anaheim Ducks for a Pacific Division showdown on Sunday.
Acquired on a draft-day trade with the Florida Panthers for Nick Boynton, Keith Ballard and the 49th pick, Jokinen recorded a goal and an assist in his Phoenix debut Saturday night and the Coyotes went on to notch a 3-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The 29-year-old Finn has played in every game over the last four seasons and missed just seven contests in his last eight campaigns. Jokinen has scored 173 goals over the past five seasons, including 34 in 2007-08 with limited help around him in Florida.
The Coyotes are also expecting big things from second-year center Peter Mueller, who also scored on Saturday. Ilya Bryzgalov, a former netminder for the Ducks, made 28 saves and will likely be in goal in this one.
Anaheim's regular-season opener didn't go as well. Rob Niedermayer scored the lone goal in its 4-1 loss to the San Jose Sharks, who received two tallies from Jonathan Cheechoo and a stellar outing from goaltender Evgeni Nabokov.
Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 37 saves for the Ducks, who are hoping to claim their second Stanley Cup title in three seasons.
