Angel's late header lifts Chivas past Montreal
Jun 21, 2012 - 4:37 AM Carson, CA (Sports Network) - Chivas USA has been poor at home this season, but Juan Pablo Angel's header in the 82nd minute gave the crowd at The Home Depot Center something to smile about as it allowed Chivas to claim a 2-1 win over the Montreal Impact on Wednesday. The Goats brought a 1-6-1 mark at home into the contest, but went in front after 15 minutes through Alejandro Moreno.
Montreal leveled the match a few minutes before halftime courtesy of Felipe Martins, but Angel's goal was a rare bright spot in the second half and allowed Chivas to grab its first win in four games.
The opening goal arrived in the first 15 minutes from a corner kick as Cesar Romero swung the ball into the area and Juan Agudelo met it with a lunging effort that deflected off of Moreno on its way into the net.
Montreal nearly scored on its own corner kick in the 23rd, but a close-range header from Nelson Rivas missed the net.
The Impact put together a good spell of pressure toward the end of the first half and were rewarded in the 42nd minute when a low cross from Davy Arnaud was followed by a nice first-time finish from Martins, who found the far corner of the net.
Neither side really took control in the second half, but the home team snatched all three points eight minutes from time when Jorge Villafana's left- wing cross found the head of Angel, who sent a looping header beyond Montreal goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts.
Martins had one last chance to prevent Montreal from losing its seventh game on the road this season, but his stoppage time free kick sailed narrowly over the crossbar.
